Blue-footed Booby.
I found out about this Galapagos native from the movie ‘Extinct’. But I checked on eBird and they are Least Concern. The irony.
Who the heck named them Booby? I get the blue-feet part.
The birds either sound like a kid trying extremely hard to whistle but failing and just blowing wind out of their mouth, or squeaky like old wooden furniture which quietly turns into a lazy nagging of sorts. Or a whiny little dog who’s about to cry if you don’t feed her treats.
Apparently it has siblings known as Brown Booby, Nazca Booby and Peruvian Booby. When a pair kisses, it looks like both are fighting with chopsticks, but in a really loving way. Similar to albatrosses. When they are showing their wingspan off, they emote like the whatever/shrug 🤷 emoji.
They have big webbed feet, which the male show off by walking slowly like Bigfoot. Stomp stomp, but with intense color. When they are displaying, their beaks flutter (open and close really rapidly like a vibrating motor) and they try to mirror each other’s actions. Just like humans. Classic mirroring but without words.
Their eyes look threatening like that of a raptor’s, but they are quite friendly in nature. The name “booby” doesn’t originate from what you think is obvious. No, they look nothing like them, tits! Different taxa. Sorry to disappoint you. The word comes from the SPanish word “bobo” which means “fool”. Yeah. Probably too friendly for their own good.
Who wouldn’t want such great blue feet? Well, you can have feet pics, but never own it. Their feet are a sexually selected trait and a result of what they eat. And it definitely doesn’t say “booby” like in the movie, or it will be rated R. C’mon, kids watch this show. The bird knows that!
