How to get better at Copywriting - 5 tips to get your copy out of the grave

I know you write copy whenever you can.

Putting your life experiences out. Trying to make it perfect, and make it make sense.

Trust me, I used to do the same.

But then I found out the bitter truth - it does not quite hit the ground.

Here are 5 things you need to be doing right when you write copy for a brand, business, or an individual:

5 Copywriting Essentials to Impress Your Clients

What should your copy be? Or not be?

Here’s the big reveal (drumroll) …

1. Your copy is not catchy enough.

Ah well, that’s a bummer.

How can it be so?

Sounds catchy to me.

You don’t understand MY copy.

Yes.

These preassumptions. Throw them in the trash, and never pick it back up.

Okay I’m here to help you.

Don’t give me those teary puppy eyes.

Now that I’ve got your stern attention … Answer my first question.

Are you being any of the following?

Grab eyeballs wherever you go, be it the sidewalk or Twitter.

Put them in your witch’s potion. And stir well.

Example -

Make your copy 30% funny, 50% generous, 10% catchy (10% wanting engagement).

So what do I mean by generous?

Now don’t send it for a sentiment analysis.

The right recipe? There’s none.

Have fun with your copy. Take it places with your brand.

2. You are not sharing enough YOU.

Is there something you went through …

Which others need to know?

This is your cue to let them in on your fantastic journey.

This is how you build readers’ trust in your copy.

Talk about

  • where you started
  • the strategies you put to the test
  • the result

Discovered a cool automation tool? Spill the tea.

People want to know you.

Only if you’ll let them.

3. Read your copy in the reader’s shoes?

We are the copywriters. We wear size 6 Nikes. The white ones.

Your readers don’t. They don’t wear the same size 6 Nikes as we do.

Let’s take a guess. Try to sell our shoes to them. Pull up that buyer’s persona chart. You’ve always referred to it for help.

Oh wait …

We don’t have the slightest idea on what size fits them.

So answer another quick question for me:

About your copy -

  • How does that make you feel?
    • Is it holding your hand and making you thirst?

If yes, GREAT job.

Your copy will take some time to get noticed.

If not, STOP.

Rewrite.

Give your copy the flavor it needs!

Oh yes, don’t be shy, sprinkle on some more!

  • Your reader somewhere

Leave your readers wanting more.

4. Is the motive clear?

Where do you want to take your readers with your copy, and why?

How useful is it for them?

Gradual life-changer?

Confusion is a serial copykiller. It’ll kill any copy in its way without flinching.

In a snap of fingers, I daresay …

Your readers would be on to reading something else.

Fact-check. Be as HONEST as you can.

You can skip the what-color-is-my-underwear parts.

Paint it red, blue, black.

Hook ‘em up, puppeteer.

5. Communicate your copy.

Are you communicating ENOUGH?

Talking fuels improvement.

Receive that critical feedback back when you’re just starting.

Engage ➡️ Ask

You ARE getting views!

Time to get those thoughts from your readers.

Don’t communicate by sharing memory, share memory by communicating.
